We always love visiting George Washington’s Mount Vernon, so we jumped at the invititon to preview Mount Vernon by Candlelight! We have enjoyed seeing the home of POTUS 1 on previous visits, but touring the Mansion at night by lantern is truly something special!
The tour begins in the Ford Orientation Center where guests are greeted by beautiful Christmas trees highlighting the lives of the Washingtons.
Guides lead guests to the Mansion, stopping along the way to share many fascinating stories and facts detailing what it was like celebrating Christmas with the Washingtons in the 18th century.
Once inside the Mansion, guests meet with several residents who recant stories of Christmas with the original first family from their points of view. Finally, guests meet with Martha Washington herself!
Martha enjoyed telling us what a fabulous dancer her husband was, so it was only natural that our tour next took us to the Greenhouse to see some 18th-century moves, and learn some ourselves!
The tour ends around the fire with carolers, warm cider and cookies. Since George Washington was a collector of exotic animals, Aladdin the Camel will be nearby to visit, too! The evening will conclude with live music in the Education Center Lobby and an opportunity to visit the Education Center exhibits and The Shops.
This was a fun and educational experience that we would definitely recommend to our followers! Tickets can be purchased here.
Worthy of note from the website: Tour start times vary each day, see the ticketing page for time information. Guests will be allowed entry through the main gate 15 minutes prior to their tour time. Mount Vernon by Candlelight takes place rain or shine. There is a $3 transaction fee in addition to ticket price.
