Learning to swim opens up so many possibilities for family fun! Not only will you find your family participating in more aquatic adventures, you’ll be able to enjoy them yourself! If you plan to be pool side or on the beach this summer, give your whole family the gift of water safety this holiday season. Over the past year we have been working with British Swim School, a year-round swim program that starts by teaching children how to save themselves in the water (water survival skills) and then moves on to teach them how to swim (swimming strokes). The program is designed for children as young as 3 months, but kids are placed in swim groups based on survival/swimming skills instead of age.
Drowning is a serious danger for children under five, but learning survival skills can reduce that risk. The swimming lessons progress from assisted to independent survival skills including learning to fall in the water, roll over, surface on back, and float independently for 20 seconds. The BSS program values the back float as a survival skill because it allows swimmers to breathe and call for help. Even though water safety is a serious concern for parents, the lessons at British Swim School are anything but serious. The instructors make learning and practicing fun! BSS prides itself on using gentle and fun teaching methods.
