The Mid-Atlantic’s Premier Four Season Resort Destination
Road-tripping and exploring new places with the Adventure Crew are two of my very favorite things. So when we were invited to visit Massanutten Resort in Virginia I was excited to combine them for what was sure to be an unforgettable summer family getaway!
After only 2.5 hours on the road (from DC), we arrived at the beautiful Massanutten Resort. You can read more about the family-friendly accommodations and amenities the resort has to offer here.
We explored many of the family-friendly summer activities.
Find out what Adventures Await…
On the Golf Course
One of the more unique adventures at Massanutten Resort can be found on the golf course with FlingGolf! Dubbed ‘Golf for the Rest of Us’, this fun alternative is golf-meets-lacrosse, and involves whipping the ball down the green as opposed to hitting it with a club.
FlingGolf was fun for the entire family and gave me and my kids the opportunity to enjoy the course with my husband for once, as he is an avid golfer and we are, well, not.

Definitely give this little-known sport a try, it had us all laughing and enjoying the green the entire afternoon. For those who are looking to enjoy the tried and true game, the resort offers two 18-hole courses. One of the best parts of FlingGolf is that it can be played without any modifications to the course if you have a group playing both.

We recommend the Fling Clinic if you are new to the sport, like us. It is a great way to learn different swings and become familiar with the game before hitting the fairway.

At a Mysterious Dinner
Massanutten Resort offers lots of exciting dining events such as Cooking Demonstrations, Dinner with the Chef, a BBQ Smoking Class and more. But since theatrics and dinner usually go hand-in-hand in our households anyway, we knew that a murder mystery dinner would be perfect for our crew!

We were treated to a fine dining experience while the talented cast of ‘Eat, Drink and be Married’ performed around us. It was literally a dream come true; I got to enjoy a buffet of snow crab legs while other people entertained my kids!

I was pleasantly surprised at just how invested our kids were in solving the mystery!

At the Family Adventure Park
Clearly, our Adventure Crew had to experience the Family Adventure Park, and we recommend you do, too! This place is perfect for the whole family!
Our group consisted of five kids ages 3-8, and 4 parents (ranging from afraid-of-heights to extreme-thrill-seekers) and we all had the best time!

Our littlest were enthralled by Gem Mining while the older kids challenged themselves with rock climbing and on the kids’ rope course that included a zip line.

We love to show our kids that overcoming fear is exhilarating so I didn’t back down when it came to a 30′ free fall from the top of the climbing wall.

All the parents loved the Mega Zip, an 800-foot adrenaline-pumping plunge that is capable of reaching speeds of up to 30 miles per hour! After all that excitement, we all enjoyed 600 feet of summer tubing down the mountain.
The whole park is definitely a can’t miss. All of the fun at Family Adventure Park is weather dependent so plan accordingly when you schedule.

At the WaterPark
I am a huge fan of water parks and Massanutten WaterPark does not disappoint! There is so much to do! The outdoor park is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day featuring pools, a wave pool, The Rockingham Racer Slides, and an obstacle course.
You can lounge in the sun or the shade, and even rent a private cabana for the day! The indoor park is open- and kept at a toasty 84 degrees- year round. It is home to the Water Fortress, a multi-level play space where you can splash, climb, and slide among the cannons, waterfalls, and an endless amount of interactive elements.

The fun doesn’t end there. We all had a blast trying to surf on the WaveRider and tubing down the huge, exhilarating slides! We relaxed in the lazy river and the large, kid-friendly hot tub. The little kid’s play area is really well thought out and offers hours of safe, fun water play for the littles.

Aside from the exciting attractions, I really loved how clean the park was (and the resort in general). I’m a slight germaphobe and therefore my standards are admittedly a bit high, but I was able to enjoy playing with my kids without thoughts of the plague lingering in the back of my head.

Perhaps even more important than the cleanliness is the safety aspect of the park. Many of you know that both Adventure Moms are former lifeguards and water-safety enthusiasts.

Because of that, I can’t help but always take notice of how attentive the lifeguards are. We were both pleased to see that all of the many lifeguards they had stationed around the park seemed vigilant and alert.

The WaterPark was also super convenient, though that should be no surprise as the Massanutten Resort strives to exceed the family-friendly standard.

There were plenty of dining options so it was nice not to have to pack lunches in the morning and drag them around with us. We were able to grab lunch and snacks from one of the concession stands and we all enjoyed our food.
There were plenty of lockers available to store our belongings so we didn’t have to worry about them while played. The staff was super friendly and helpful (again, I must say that this was true throughout the entire resort).

All of these things made for a truly enjoyable, fun, and relaxing day for the entire family. It’s no wonder that the Massanutten WaterPark has won so many ‘Best Water Park’ awards!

If your kids are like ours and not easily lured away from the water, it’s nice to have something close by to use as bait. Luckily, Diamond Jim’s Arcade and Sweetz are in the same building.
Our kids loved trying all the video games and insisted they would win big at the claw games (spoiler alert: they did not!). There is a nice mix of classic arcade fun and new video games to entertain everyone.
Sweetz offers everything from homemade candies to soft serve ice cream and gourmet coffee for parents. But you’ve been warned, these treats are downright delicious!

On Massanutten Peak
There is no escaping the beauty of the mountains in the Shenandoah Valley. We loved the views from our accommodations, but experiencing them from Massanutten Peak with my kids is something I’ll never forget.
We started this adventure with a scenic chairlift ride up the mountain (90 minutes round trip). The chairlift itself was really fun for the kids. They loved watching the mountain bikers speed by and spotting animals below.

Once we reached the top, we headed to the overlook for a view that was absolutely breathtaking. We followed the trail to discover several other spots that offer equally majestic views.

There are over 30 miles of trails you can walk, hike, mountain bike, and even do some geocaching.

Make sure the entire family is wearing closed toed shoes, even if you aren’t planning any extreme hikes.

In An Escape Rooms and experiencing VR
I am officially obsessed with Escape Rooms! This was the first escape room for all of us and we had a blast trying to retrieve the Lost Jewel of Zanzibar (which we did, with 12 minutes to spare!).

While being locked in a small space with five young children would typically be the stuff of nightmares, this was a really enjoyable and exciting experience for the whole family! The Lost Jewel of Zanzibar is one of the three family-friendly escape rooms at Massanutten Resort.
The escape room doors are not actually locked and your kids (or you) are able to leave the room for any reason at any time.

We also tried out the Virtual Reality, which the Dads especially enjoyed! There are two VR stations with more than 12 Active VR Games and two racing simulators for race car simulation.
Any age can play, though kids 8 and up typically get the most out of it. While you’re checking out the VR or Escape Room, don’t miss The Fun Factory located next door.

I think some of our kids’ heads almost exploded when we went inside because there is ice cream, Italian ice, a make your own Teddy Bear Factory, and the candy corner with every candy imaginable. There are also toys, books, jewelry, games, and apparel.
Adventure Awaits you!
