Adventure Theatre MTC blew us away with their newest production of Huckleberry Finn’s Big River. This production is an extremely well done revision of Broadway’s Tony-Winning Musical. This divisive literary classic is performed by the talented cast with language appropriate for all ages.
The small stage comes to life and the set transports us to the Mississippi River where the audience is given front row seats to see how true friendships form in the most unlikely circumstances. Huckleberry Finn, who has never had a structured home environment, is feeling stifled from the rules of Widow Douglas’ home since being adopted. Jim, a boy around the age of Huck and a slave of Widow Douglas, is afraid that he is being sold and that he will never be able to find his mother and sister. In a twist of fate, they find each other near the shores of the Mississippi, each on their personal journey for their own freedom, despite the differences in their circumstances.
The boys share their pasts and bond as they spend days together on their raft. Their tumultuous journey tests their friendship, especially when two con-artists join them. The presence of their guests invoke an inner struggle for Huck. Should he follow the rules and laws as enforced by the adults in his life or does he disregard society’s laws and help his friend? Thankfully the bonds of true friendship hold tight and Huck realizes that doing what is right should make someone feel good and the only thing that feels right is helping his friend.

The hour long play emphasizes that true friendships will prevail in the darkest of circumstances. It also serves as a great opportunity to continue dialogue with our kids on the sorted history of our country and the need to do what is morally right.
