New Year’s Eve at Home with Kids
- Celebrate Early – Start the new year off with well rested kids. For the really young ones a Noon Years Eve celebration is perfect! They can enjoy the festivities without disrupting their routine. For older kids, pick a time that works best for your family and choose a live stream or pre-recoded one time watch. We celebrate New Year’s eve with the ball drop in London and stream the live ball drop to get the full countdown effect.
- Keep it Simple! – A few decorations go a long way. Focus the celebrations on spending time with family and friends, having fun and celebrating a new year. Let your kids take as much ownership for the celebrations as appropriate for their age. Challenge your kids to decorate using only things that represent 2019 or what they envision for 2020. Not only will you save time and money not trying to plan a Pinterest perfect party, it will fuel the excitement!
- Strength in Numbers – Make it a party by inviting friends, classmates, neighbors or family members over to celebrate with you. Whether you are trying to pull off a recorded ball drop as the real thing or helping your kids stay awake for midnight the more the merrier. Over the years we have found that enthusiasm from the parents is a great way to hype any kids event.
- Move it! – Incorporate games, dancing or performances into your celebration. Keeping the kids busy helps to channel their excitement in a productive way which reduces the chaos. It can be simple things like freeze dance, scavenger hunt, bubble dancing or flashlight dancing. The most important thing is to have fun!
- Mix it Up – Keep the fun moving by changing activities. Having a time schedule helps kids to keep track of the time. For littles you can have 10 minute segments, but older kids can change activities every hour.
- Fuel the Celebration – we love enlisting the kids help in coming up with the menu for New Year’s Eve celebrations. We love to provide a buffet of appetizers and snacks so eating doesn’t require sitting down for a long time.
- Cheers! – We always pick a fancy or special drink for the kids to cheers with at “midnight”. You don’t have to pop a bottle of sparkling cider, any beverage that your kids enjoy will work.
- Year in Review – Taking stock of the year as it ends is a great habit. Leave time to share memories, make lists, gather gratitudes and just reminisce. Flip through pictures or even look back at the calendar to remember all the adventure you packed in over the past 12 months. It is really fun for kids to see pictures of themselves from the previous January to see how much they have grown and changed. Make top 10 lists for 2019.
- Set Goals – Provide activities or conversation starters that will allow the children to reflect on the past year and set goals for the year ahead. When your kids are still little it’s a great idea to create family resolutions. Check out our post on family resolutions.
- End with a Bang! – Add some flare to your celebration with something like sparklers, poppers or confetti. By really hyping these activities up as the “midnight” celebration it creates excitement as well as a signal that the celebration is ending. Setting these expectations from the beginning helps transition from party animals to sleeping angels.
