The Eastern Shore is one of the most popular summer vacation destinations in our area. Whether you come for a day, a week or a summer the Eastern Shore has adventures for the whole family!

The beach is why we all sit in traffic on the Bay Bridge, but when you are accommodating naps and inclement weather sometimes you need a back up plan. We are excited to share some of our favorite family adventures at the beach. You can even enjoy some of these adventures in the spring or fall when it’s too cold to be in the water.
Favorite Family Adventures
- Swimming at one of the many beaches
- Ride on the Sea Rocket in Ocean City, MD
- Seining at Holts Landing State Park
- Discover Chincoteague with Captain Barry’s Backbay Cruises.
- Viewing wild ponies on Assateague Island
- A day on the Bay at James Farm Ecological Preserve
- Browseabout Books, Funland, The Ice Cream Store & more on the Rehoboth Boardwalk

Getting There
Bay Bridge traffic is the worst! Try to plan ahead and travel during off peak travel times (so avoid Fridays and Saturdays during the summer!). The Bay Bridge Traffic Cam is helpful and follow the @TheMDTA and #baybridge on twitter for live updates. We love to stop at Vanderwende Creamery for farm fresh ice cream and dairy products. The line for the bathroom is often longer than the line for ice cream though, so plan accordingly. We limit the screen time with our kids so we spent many hours playing eye-spy & guessing games; listening to books on tape or rocking out to music; trying to get trucks to honk & waving at other kids; and searching for wildlife or enjoying the scenery.
Where to Stay
We love staying in the Bethany Beach area because it is very family friendly. The rentals in Bethany, Rehoboth, Dewey, Lewis, Fenwick Island and Ocean City fill up quickly so book for next summer by this Christmas! We always recommend using VRBO, Airbnb or a similar site to find family friendly accommodations. There are several camping options near the beach too. Avoid the booked rental and go in the off season. We love celebrating Halloween, Thanksgiving, New Years and Easter at the beach.
