Captain Chris and his crew at Family Fishing Adventures offer families a phenomenal fishing experience on the Sea Dragon out of the Annapolis Harbor. I remember fishing at the pond behind our house as a kid with my Dad. Keeping 3 kids content fishing was difficult. One of us always needed help casting, reeling or baiting. Not to mention we were impatient to catch something. It is basically a miracle he took us so much. We have had a similar experience with our kids. Family Fishing Adventures is a game changer! We were so excited to be invited out on the Sea Dragon. Not only did we have fun on the boat, but all the gear is set up and easy to use. Honestly though, the real magic is Captain Chris! His energy and passion for teaching kids about marine life in the bay is bottomless. Captain Chris had everyone laughing and learning the entire time!
The tour starts at the Annapolis City Marina dock where we were welcomed aboard the Sea Dragon. Captain Chris taught us all about the oysters and crabs that live in the bay and how important it is to protect them and their environment. Family Fishing Adventures is dedicated to protecting the bay and providing experiences that inspire others to as well. We learned how to tell the difference between male and female crabs and how to measure them. We learned about the bait – blood worms are carnivorous and have teeth! After a concise safety briefing and brief itinerary we were off to our first fishing spot. Along the way Captain Chris identified local landmarks, dropped relevant local history bits and spotted wildlife.
We stopped at a sand bar near an osprey nest and dropped our lines in. Captain Chris showed us all how to use the fishing poles and reminded us again about safety before he and his first mate got everyone’s hooks baited and in the water. These guys are a well oiled machine when it comes to fishing with kids. They had everyone’s poles in within minutes. Then the fish started to bite! We were pulling in fish after fish, sometimes two at a time and Captain Chris or his first mate were always right there to help. We caught mostly spots and rockfish. Captain Chris and his first mate helped us take them off the hook, taught us about the fish and then let us throw them back while they put another blood worm on the hook. The Family Fishing Adventures is an educational and fun family activity so all the fishing is catch and release. One fish was was injured when it came off the hook. When it was thrown back in an osprey swooped down and grabbed it out of the water. We saw the osprey return to the nest to feed their young. It was amazing to watch the food chain in action.
We hit up another fishing spot and before we left every kid onboard had caught at least one fish! Captain Chris took us over to some crab pots he had in the water and let each of the kids pull one up. Unfortunately we only caught raw chicken (the crab bait), but the kids had fun and we saw some crabs in the water. The only thing we didn’t like about our Family Fishing Adventure was that it ended! My girls got off the boat and promptly asked if they could get fishing poles for Christmas. Captain Chris offered some great recommendations and we can’t wait to get out and fish again as a family! Thank you Family Fishing Adventures for making fishing a part of our family fun!
