We are having a really great time at Bethany Beach! Today we decided to take advantage of one of the programs offered by the Delaware Seashore State Park at Holts Landing (also available at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes), which is about a 10-minute car ride from Bethany. Seining the Bay was probably one of the most fun and educational things we have done since we got here! Two Park Rangers walk you down to the bay where you drop a 20-foot Seine net to catch fish, crabs, and other critters.
It takes two adults with a few kid helpers to take the net out about 10 feet, dragging it along the bottom of the bay before bringing it back up to the beach. You then quickly retrieve any sea life you have caught and put it in a tiny plastic pool. My kids were thrilled to find baby flounders, minnows, hermit crabs, snails, jellyfish, shrimp, bluefin crabs, and even a pike fish. The Rangers went over everything that we caught the kids were able to ask questions and touch each of the critters. It was a really awesome experience that I would highly recommend!
Know Before You Go:
$5 per person.
You must pre-register by calling 302 227 6991.
All participants entering the water are required to wear closed-toed shoes (since I didn’t bring any on my vacation I had to borrow from what they had, though it isn’t guaranteed that they will always have extras).
Don’t forget water, bug spray, and sunscreen.
The program runs for about an hour, but you are welcome to stay on the beach as long as you like after it ends.
