The Broadway smash hit WAITRESS has DC theatre goers asking for seconds!
Waitress is an uplifting musical that celebrates friendship, motherhood, and the magic of a well-made pie featuring original music and lyrics by 6-time Grammy® nominee Sara Bareilles. The life of expert pie baker and waitress, Jenna (played by Desi Oakley) is turned upside down (pineapple pie) when she falls for the new doctor in town while carrying her abusive husband’s baby! Jenna gets a reprieve from her messy life as she bakes her hopes and dreams into new flavor combinations with hilariously creative names for daily “pie specials”. Jenna relies on her coworkers and the diner’s owner for support and advice as she decides to use a pie competition as her ticket out.
The live music and performances fill National Theatre creating larger than life moments. Cast members all showcase their insane vocal abilities. Fellow waitresses, Dawn (Lenne Klingaman) and Becky (Charity Angel Dawson) sing along side Jenna in some of the most catchy and humorous numbers like “The Negative” as well as the tender numbers like “A Soft Place to Land”. Ogie (Jeremy Morse) steals more than Dawn’s heart with “Never Ever Getting Rid of Me”. Jenna breaks hearts wide open with “She Used to Be Mine” and “Everything Changes” back to back. Due to the diner set, the dancing is limited but diner patrons are choreographed creatively changing positions and providing back up vocals.
Waitress is a great date night or girls (or guys) night out! When taking children to the show please consider that the topics of infidelity, sex and abuse will be portrayed on stage and plan accordingly. While we felt the ending could have empowered Jenna a bit more, Waitress has female positive messages with a killer soundtrack!
