This month my son started taking WuShu, a type of Chinese Martial Arts similar to Kungfu, at The Cathay School in Rockville, MD. WuShu is a National Sport in China and is well-practiced among all ages. WuShu training helps students learn discipline, respect, and self-control; build confidence and self-fulfillment. It is also great for developing physical conditioning, flexibility, balance, coordination and reflexes.
When my son expressed interest in martial arts we began researching the options and decided we wanted to pick a program that included the cultural aspect of Martial Arts.
After reading Coach Zhuang’s bio, we knew we had found it! Hui Zhuang began her martial arts training in China when she was nine years old and was quickly recruited to attend the Bejing Sports School. She was selected to compete as a member of the Bejing WuShu team, widely considered as the best martial artists in the world, where she trained with other stars such as Jet Li. During her career, she has traveled the world for competitions. She has won the gold medal at the Asian Olympic Games, four gold medals in the Asian WuShu Championships and is a five-time winner of the Women’s All-Around Champion of China.
We have been taking classes with Coach Zhuang for a month and my son is loving it! It is challenging but fun and he is very motivated to move up to the next belt! The program has ten levels from white to black with wearing colored belts that symbolize the level of achievement. Each belt level has a specific curriculum. With regular attendance of two times per week, students should progress to a new belt level about every two to four months through the beginning levels. As students progress into the advanced levels, it will take longer to complete.
